Fireside Chat with Steven Worrell from Microsoft ANZ

At Johnson Partners' strategy retreat, we had the privilege of a fireside chat with Steven Worrall, Managing Director of Microsoft Australia and New Zealand. Naturally, AI was front and centre.

As The Wall Street Journal aptly puts it, Microsoft’s AI initiatives “are not just tools but catalysts for a digital transformation revolution.”

AI is no longer a futuristic concept; it’s the linchpin of how businesses operate and compete—ours included. The advantages are clear: improved efficiency, enhanced data analytics, superior decision-making, and relentless innovation. But here’s the hard truth: if you’re not integrating AI into your strategy, you’re already falling behind.

An Accenture report sends a chilling reminder: three out of four C-suite executives believe that if they don’t scale AI within the next five years, they risk going out of business entirely. COVID-19 was a crash course in this reality. Companies like Woolworths didn’t just survive; they thrived by embracing AI to optimise supply chains, manage inventory, and cut costs. The pandemic forced them to adapt rapidly, and AI was the key to staying ahead.

ANZ Bank is another case in point. By integrating AI into its customer service operations, ANZ drastically reduced wait times with AI-powered chatbots while enhancing customer satisfaction. On the back end, AI is driving fraud detection and risk management, offering stronger security to their clients. This isn’t just about keeping up—it’s about outpacing the competition.

In education, AI is revolutionising how we approach learning. The University of Sydney partnered with healthcare organisations to use AI in predicting COVID-19 outbreaks and managing healthcare resources. This collaboration didn’t just enhance public health responses—it showcased AI’s potential to solve complex, large-scale problems in real-time.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Xero is leading the charge in the accounting sector. By leveraging AI, Xero has automated transaction categorisation and introduced smart invoicing, streamlining financial processes for small businesses. This is more than just convenience; it’s a game-changer for efficiency and user experience.

And let’s not forget the supply chain innovations driven by AI. Blackmores, an Australian supplements giant, optimised its supply chain and fine-tuned product recommendations with AI, leading to increased sales and customer satisfaction. Fonterra, one of the world’s largest dairy exporters, is using AI-driven predictive analytics to forecast demand, manage inventory, and streamline logistics—yielding significant cost savings and operational efficiency.

But as we rush to embrace AI, it’s crucial to acknowledge the darker side of this technology. AI can amplify existing biases, leading to unfair outcomes in hiring, lending, and even law enforcement. The reliance on AI for decision-making also raises ethical concerns, particularly when it comes to transparency and accountability. Who is responsible when an AI system makes a mistake? Moreover, the rapid adoption of AI threatens to disrupt the job market, potentially displacing millions of workers. It’s a double-edged sword: while AI offers unparalleled opportunities for growth and innovation, it also presents significant risks that businesses must navigate carefully.

AI’s impact isn’t limited to internal processes. It extends to purpose-driven projects that combine economic value with social good. Microsoft’s collaboration with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) to tackle marine plastic pollution is a prime example. By harnessing AI and scientific expertise, they’ve developed innovative solutions to monitor and reduce plastic waste in our oceans.

The question isn’t if AI will transform your business—it’s whether you’ll be leading the charge or scrambling to catch up. Do you have an AI champion within your ranks? Or will your competitors leverage these powerful tools to outpace you in a matter of months?

The clock is ticking, and the choice is yours: innovate or become irrelevant. The stakes have never been higher. Are you ready to take the leap?
