The management of the New Zealand Superannuation Fund is overseen by an independent Board, The Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation. Board members are chosen for their experience, training and expertise in the management of financial investments, as well as their mix of complementary skills including  governance, leadership, sustainable finance/ESG and commercial acumen.

For this appointment, particular emphasis was placed upon individuals with CEO or executive leadership experience in the management or oversight of financial investments and/or asset management business, with a breadth of knowledge as an investor across a broad range of asset classes including substantive capital market experience and/or oversight of direct investment, investment risk management, and monitoring investment performance.

A New Zealander, Andrew Wilson is a former international banker who spent over 25 years at Goldman Sachs Asset Management-rising to CEO of GSAM International (EMEA) and Chairman of Global Fixed Income and Liquidity Solutions-where he was recognised for his leadership in global fixed income markets, strategic insight, and commitment to diversity and governance. In his roles at GSAM, he oversaw multi-billion-dollar investment portfolios and led teams responsible for navigating complex global financial markets. His expertise also includes regulatory oversight, client strategy, and organisational growth.

The Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation (Guardians) is an autonomous Crown entity entrusted with the management and investment of a significant pool of funds held by the New Zealand Superannuation Fund. The Guardians’ purpose is “sustainable investments delivering strong returns for all New Zealanders”. The Fund is currently worth over $85 billion.
